Alarm Bells: Save us in Wakiso

I am a resident of Kayunga in Wakiso Town Council but we have never got piped water and yet we are willing to pay all the money NWSC needs to bring us clean water. We pay people with bicycles to bring us water but we do not know where they get it from and it happens to be expensive. Please do something to save us before we get diseases from dirty water. One step backwards for the motherland

The country could slip down yet another rung in the ladder of democracy ratings with the looming enactment of a law purportedly designed to regulate public gatherings. Sadly, but not surprisingly, Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura on Tuesday got worked up as he referred to this obnoxious Bill at a dialogue, ironically arranged by the Electoral Commission, to discuss how Uganda can have peaceful elections next year. 00:00 09.09.2010 from channel Monitor Online

Mutale missing conspicuously

I have been wondering where the well known Major Kakooza Mutale is. He has been conspicuously missing from the political activities in the city. He and the Kalangala Action Plan are alleged to have beaten people during the past elections. His name is synonymous with whipping and many people still fear him. In the recent past, the Kiboko Squad has appeared in Kampala and has seemed to act more enthusiastically than Maj. Mutale. 00:00 09.09.2010 from channel Monitor Online

2011 poll pointless

This country has learnt nothing and forgotten nothing. According to Sunday Monitor August 29, the President was quoted saying, “. . . I am not leaving power. . . ” Why should we borrow money from the World Bank to conduct presidential elections if the President does not want to leave power for others? My humble request would be that we hold parliamentary elections only. 00:00 09.09.2010 from channel Monitor Online

We must deal with al-Shabaab with great caution

It is clear that al-Shabaab is a terrorist organisation that needs to be tackled urgently. Before the July 11 Kampala bombings which killed more than 76 people, nobody imagined al-Shabaab’s capacity to strike beyond Somalia. It appears the command system of al-Shabaab might have been decentralised and the group broken down into cells to give regional al-Shabaab commanders greater autonomy to carry out attacks. 00:00 09.09.2010 from channel Monitor Online

Chaos is the way NRM works, not how it fails

Just when we thought we were getting to a point where we could theoretically prevent rigging or make it minimal, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries threw the door open to all manner of mayhem and mischief and showed how little we’ve learnt from the 1980 elections. Then, the rigging was brazen and sometimes brutal, ranging from voters being threatened to candidates being kidnapped. 00:00 09.09.2010 from channel Monitor Online
